My name is Steve and I suppose, in a way, I have already started the pirate lifestyle. I sold my rdicuously oversized house, along with most of my worldly possessions, last December, 2008. Right now I'm living small and working and scrimping and saving so I have enough to pay for my kids' colleges, get a sailboat, and start enjoying a real life. The boat search has started in earnest and I'm hopeful to be aboard and sailing the Caribbean in January 2011. Of course this is subject to staying on the straight and narrow while ashore and building up my cruising kitty so I never have to return to the good 'ol USA, which just doesn't seem all that good anymore. I guess I'm just tired of following all their rules while they waste all the money I send them. I plan to be self-employed as I have been for the last 10 years as a commodities trader and hope technology will improve enough down in the islands so I can get a decent internet connection at a price that won't drain the kitty too much. So far my experiences there are very hit or miss on that front. Come on WIMAX!

Steve, sounds like you have a solid plan. One of the reasons I sold everything and moved onto a boat was/is my frustration with the "rules" we are supposed to be playing by.

My husband drives aroung town with a huge sign on the back of his pick up truck saying "Once upon a time it was we the people. It's not too late, 100.3 FM" (Local radio station that agrees w/him) Then he has Glenn Beck & Jason Lewis on each side of his bumper. People have been honking and going "YEAH", and even taking pictures while he is out and about. It's probably even on the internet somewhere! That is his rebellion to what is going on polically right now. We are both very frustrated too!
