Situation awareness, or SA, is the perception of environmental elements within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future. It is also a field of study concerned with perception of the environment critical to decision-makers in complex, dynamic areas from aviation, air traffic control, power plant operations, military command and control — to more ordinary but nevertheless complex tasks such as driving an automobile or motorcycle.
Situation awareness (SA) involves being aware of what is happening around you to understand how information, events, and your own actions will impact your goals and objectives, both now and in the near future.
The above definition is from Wikipedia.
Why is situational awareness so important?
Too many people, probably most, go through their life with blinders on. They live life in a fog and the image I think of is people having a giant ping-pong ball over their head. Why?
Often, people will get up out of bed in the morning and not “feel” like going to work today. Or in the evening, while reviewing the days activities comment, today was a “good” day or a “bad” day. The problem is they don't think about WHY it was a good day or a bad day. Why don’t they want to go to work?
The problem, as I stated above, is people are in a fog. You get so caught up in making it through the day, getting out of the house on time in the morning, getting to work on time, getting your work done on time, getting back home at a reasonable time, getting everything done at home, and getting to bed on time so you can do it all again tomorrow.

This is where situational awareness comes in to play. You must become aware of what is going on around you. For example, in self-defense training one of the key things you learn is situational awareness. You learn to pay attention to what is going on around you. Another example we all deal with is driving a car. Many people get in their car and drive down the road looking straight ahead, in their own little world, not aware of what is going on around them. Others, like me, keep their head on a swivel and pay attention to everything going on around them.
Why did you have a good day or a bad day? You must train yourself to pay attention to the details of your life, exactly like you train yourself in situational awareness. Stop passively living life and get out of the fog, remove the ping-pong ball, and see the trees and not just the forest. As you discover what activities and actions make for a good day, you can do more of these things. As you discover the activities and actions that make for a bad, you can do less of these things.
Now you are using situational awareness and actively living your life.

The Pirate Lifestyle is all about attitude.
“The difference between ordeal and adventure is Attitude.” Bob Bitchin

To live a successful Pirate Lifestyle you must maintain an outstanding attitude. Your success is directly dependent on your attitude. Most people rarely think about their attitude and they certainly don't think about changing it. Attitude is the result of the flow of your thoughts, ideas, feelings, and beliefs, and we must regularly monitor and adjust our attitude. Your attitude is totally in your control.
Life be short so lets 'ave some fun. Aye!
Day in and day out, the way you think affects your attitude and influences the way you handle daily situations. The human mind is kind of like a computer, and you control the thoughts input and actions output. You are what you think. So, do you see the glass as half empty or half full? Do you say mostly cloudy or partly sunny? Seriously, it is all in the attitude. Remove the words someday, hope, and try from your vocabulary. Replace them with the words today, will, and do. Thoughts can be very powerful and when they are mixed with purpose, persistence, and passion you will be a winner.
“Try not. Do or do not, there is no try.” Yoda
Most people go through life complaining about their lack of success. They see other people, “lucky” people, moving steadily forward to their goals and they feel if they possessed these same qualities they would attain the same desirable results. Sadly, and incorrectly, these people assume they can never possess these positive qualities. Wrong! The truth is, anyone can completely change their attitude. As already stated, the human mind is like a computer, and can be programmed with undesirable traits and characteristics creating a negative attitude, or desirable traits and characteristics creating a positive attitude.
Adjust yer programmin' 'n create a positive attitude. Arrr.
With a positive attitude, one of confidence you will be less affected by negative, pessimistic thoughts. We all know people who radiate failure, discouragement, and “I can’t.” And, at the same time, we all know people filled with confidence, courage, enthusiasm, and “I can.” As you encounter obstacles, you must react in a positive way. Other people will put your positive attitude to the test, but only you control your attitude unless you give that control to others. You decide whether you are happy or sad, joyful or angry, trusting or jealous, courageous or fearful, composed or anxious, and contented or envious. On a happiness scale of ONE to TEN, with TEN being abundantly happy and ONE being ready to walk the plank, where do you see yourself? Ye better be sayin’ TEN, matey!
Th’ beatin’s will continue ‘til yer attitude improves.
Circumstances beyond your control constantly happen and will continue to happen. Everyone encounters hard times, everyone encounters obstacles, and the challenge is to stay on the road and out of the ditch. It is not what happens to us that matters, it is our attitude and how we respond that matters. Are you asking, “How can I change and improve my attitude?” You are constantly building, creating, and adjusting your attitude. Both in the direction of your effect on other people as well as the effect others have on you. Stop focusing on what you don’t like and start focusing on what you do like. Then take action on your new positive thoughts.
Adjust yer attitude, me hearty. Ye will be havin’ more fun.

Ahoy.
The Sail to Freedom Contest ended on Saturday. I was supposed to pick the winner on Monday. Being the procrastinator that I am I put off making the selection until Wednesday. There were several excellent entries.
Here are the top entries (in no particular order):
MarthaGiffen: Freedom to me means freedom to sail,to wherever, in whatever, with whomever I choose. And I don't even like "real" sailing! LOL #sail
GeoffHoff: Captain Rob asks what "sail into freedom" means. I say, point the front of the boat towards your dreams and let the wind take the #sail
racasper: Every debt payment, and item of clutter in storage, is a link in the chains that bind me. Sail to Freedom means breaking those links! #sail
fairykate55: I"m ridin' the rainbow to my glorious future. Gonna set my #sail and fly towards freedom on the wings of inspiration.
Mac: Freedom is when I hear the waves knocking on my hull and the clinging of the halyards on the masts that surround my slip as I awake to the smell of fresh brewed morning coffee. (email)
The winning entry is:
GeoffHoff: Captain Rob asks what "sail into freedom" means. I say, point the front of the boat towards your dreams and let the wind take the #sail
Thanks to everyone that played in the contest. I had a really FUN time with it.
